Clinton girls relay teams smash state records

State Meet Highlights

The Mississippi state championships are conducted on two days at Pearl High School. The 2A, 4A and 6A schools competed on May 10 and the 1A, 3A and 5A schools went on Monday, May 12. It was the performance turned in by the Clinton girls relay teams that proved to be the most newsworthy.

Top Performances:

- The Clinton girls relay squad produced stunningly fast times in the 4x100 and 4x200. Freshman Demi Washington was surely a big part of those results as she also won the 6A 100 (11.81) and 200 (24.06). Washington won both races last year as an eighth grader, too. Teammate Justice Sims was second in both events – for the second straight year.

- Terrell Smith of Vicksburg (5A) showed that he is the top sprinter in the state with double victories in the 100 (10.71) and 200 (21.03). Both results were achieved into a headwind. He also won the long jump with 23-8.

- Lashard Durr of Harrison Central was a double winner in the 6A boys hurdles events, in 14.46 and 39.11. And he also placed fifth in the long jump.

- Yakeisha McLaurin of Brandon won her fourth 6A discus title, with 142-7. She set the all-time state record two years ago as a sophomore and then did not compete at the state meet last year. She won her first state title as an eighth grader.

- Catera Thomas of Jim Hill, a sophomore, ran 55.83 to win the 6A girls 400 meters.

Top Teams:

The Clinton girls scored 101.5 points and needed almost all of them to hold off Meridian, which was second with 95 in the Class 6A girls standings. Harrison Central won the 6A boys title with 89 points.

In Class 5A, the Canton girls (94 points) edged Pearl (81) for the title. And on the boys' side, Oxford (76) beat Vicksburg (76).

Top Competition: The boys 6A long jump was a tight battle between Deshavion Flowers of Greenville-Weston and Lakendric Tuck of Harrison Central. Flowers got the win with 23-9.50 and Tuck was second at 23-9. Tuck did win a title, though, in the triple jump, with 47-6.50.

Record-breakers: The Clinton girls relays teams were the story of the meet. They broke the all-time Mississippi record in the 4x200 by more than THREE SECONDS, with US#6 1:37.58. And they broke their own record in the 4x100 with US#6 46.14. Those are blazing fast times and they may only get better. Clinton has the fastest two girls in the state and they are a freshman (Washington) and a sophomore (Sims).
