Oxford boys and girls combine for 300 points in 5A
Mississippi Highlights
- The state association added a new event, the 4x800 relay, to its state championships for the first time. Madison Central's girls ran 9:50.43 to establish a new meet record, as did the Pearl boys with 8:19.28. Both teams won the 6A events.
- Monica Mosley, senior from Clinton, won the 6A 100 hurdles in 14.18 and just missed the all-time state record in the event (14.14). She also won her third straight title in the 300 hurdles with 43.73. She also won the triple jump with 40-2.
- Sanchez Berry of Bassfield ran a fast 10.48/21.38 double to claim Class 2A titles.
- Orianna Shaw from Lafayette, a junior, broke the Class 4A record in the 400 meters with 57.03 seconds.
- Justice Sims edged out teammate and defending champion Demi Washington in the Class 6A 100 meters, 11.87 to 11.88. Sims and Washington also went 1-2 in the 200 meters, with Sims going 23.98 and Washington 24.67. A year earlier, Washington beat Sims in both events.
- Starkville junior Kate Mattox won the distance double in Class 6A with 5:07.91 in the 1,600 and 11:19.25 in the 3,200.
- Patton Little from Starkville won the 6A boys 1,600 meters in 4:22.49.
- Shamar Tucker from Pearl won the 6A 800 meters with 1:55.41.
- Deshaven Flowers from Greenville won the 6A boys long jump with 23-8.
- Eric Richards from Raymond won the 4A boys high jump with a meet record clearance of 7-0.
- Ralesheia Gee from Starkville won the 6A girls long jump with 19 feet.
- Javin Arrington from Laurel won the Class 5A 100 meters in 10.78 seconds.
- The Oxford boys won the Class 5A 4x200 relay in 1:26.68 to break a meet record. Oxford also broke the meet record in the 4x100 with 41.51 and was pushed by Laurel, which ran 41.81 for second.
- Oxford senior James Burnett won the 5A 400 meters in 48.35 seconds. Sophomore teammate Jaquan Webb ran 21.36 to win the 200 meters.
- Leon Miles of Vicksburg won the 5A 300-meter hurdles in 38.17 seconds.
- Nakia Walker from Independence won the 3A triple jump with 37-11.
- Tyler McDowell from Vicksburg won the 5A triple jump with 47-1.
- Qenderrim Barnett of Noxubee broke the 4A meet record in the boys discus with 156-7.
Teams -
- In Class 1A, the Tupelo Christian Academy girls racked up 109 points for the team title. Myrtle won the boys championship with 72 points.
- In Class 2A, Winona's girls were the dominant team with 108 points. Bassfield edged out Strayhorn to collect the boys title 76-71.
- In Class 3A, Tylertown's men swept with a monster 171-point effort. The girls completed the sweep by scoring 95 points.
- In Class 4A, Senatobia's boys scored 105 points for the team crown. McComb got the girls team title with 104.50.
- In Class 5A, Oxford got two big wins. The boys amassed 156 points and the girls scored 144 points. The teams combined for 300 points!
- In Class 6A, Pearl won the boys team title with 79 points and Clinton won the girls meet with 131.50.
