Mattox, Washington go out on top in Class 6A meet

By Doug Binder, DyeStat Editor

Distance runner Kate Mattox of Starkville concluded her Mississippi state meet career with 19 cross country and track titles and Demi Washington of Clinton won her 10th track title (including relays) over the weekend at Pearl High School.

Mattox swept the 800, 1,600 an 3,200. She began her successful prep career in middle school and has owned the events ever since. She won six 3,200-meter finals.

Washington, who led Clinton to its fifth consecutive 6A girls team title, lost to a teammate in the 100 and 200 finals last year. But this time, she ran 11.56 in the 100 and 23.87 and blew the competition away.

Madison Central's Asia Poe, a junior, captured four 6A titles: the long jump (18-3.75), high jump (5-6) and triple jump (40-4.50) in addition to the 100 meter hurdles (14.98).

Forest Hill teammates Dante' Brown and Diamante Griffin locked down the top spots in the 6A sprints. Brown won the 100 in 10.61 and Griffin took the 200 in 21.34. They teamed up for a victory in the 4x200.

Columbus junior Michael McCloud won the 6A 400 meters in 47.85. Sophomore Santoria Harris of Terry won the girls 400 in 55.64.

- Freshman Diandrenique Gaines of Hattiesburg sped to the Class 5A 200 meters title in 24.15. Bralon Robinson of Canton Public won the 5A 100 in 10.61 seconds.

- Syerie Moton of Northeast Lauderdale swept the Class 4A girls sprints with 12.03 in the 100 and 25.07 in the 200. Sophomore Ebony Gayden of McComb led her team to the title by sweepings wins in both hurdles events.

- The Tylertown boys rolled up big points in Class 3A (167) thanks to efforts like the 1-2-3 finish in the 200 meters by Keyon Jefferson, Kennon Carr and JaRule Melvin.

- Cameron Crump of Strayhorn was the standout of the Class 2A meet, winning the 100 (10.69), the 200 (21.90), the 400 (50.03) and the long jump (22-9).
